Bosun Chair Painting
Bosun chair painting refers to painting services preformed when the painter is suspended from a roof or edge in a special device known as the Bosun Chair. Unlike the case of climbing harness, where the painting is suspended with the help of a harness that is strapped to the painter’s body, the bosun chair consists of a rigid seat. This makes the chair suitable for performing painting jobs that span many hours, as it more comfortable to perform the job while sitting on a seat as compared to hanging from a harness. Some Bosun chairs would be nothing more than a plank and some wires used to suspend it, making it an extremely dangerous way of performing painting jobs as there was a constant risk of the painter falling without any back support and in such cases a separate harness would be required to increase the safety of the painter. These days a number of changes have been made to the classic Bosun chair with a large number of variations available in the market depending on the specifications of the painter and the job to be performed. The Bosun chair is ideal for working for short or extended periods in suspension, for example, building maintenance, painting, window washing or other suspension works. As it is a Controlled Descent Apparatus it cannot be moved up and down, but can only be moved in one direction which is downwards, making it imperative that the job be properly defined before the actual painting process can be started to maximise the work time and not have to start the entire job from the top all over again only because a spot was missed at the top.
Generally Bosun chair equipments are used to perform painting and maintenance work on high rise offices and structures on where conventional painting equipments cannot be used, or may prove to be too expensive or dangerous to use as safety is always a prime consideration when painting a high rise. Ladders and stands can only be used up to a certain level, above which it becomes expensive to keep adding layers to the stands. The main advantage of Bosun chair painting is that they can use for any kinds of exterior, and interior, paint jobs regardless of the height of the building.
Like all paint jobs, the contractor first starts with examination of the building, mostly the exterior as Bosun Chair painting is used primarily for painting and maintenance work on the external structure. Once that’s done, the team can come up with different ways in the work can be done, which mostly includes first taking care of any and all defects that need to be fixed, as only once that’s done can the painting process actually start. Depending on the size of the job (wall) the number of painters suspended at one time can change, as to add another painter only another bosun chair is needed along with its own suspension system.
All the parts and steps in the painting process can be covered and performed by using a bosun chair. Mostly, bosun chair painting is used in cases where there is minimum damage, or need for repair, to the wall before the application for paint. But, no matter what the case, basic steps like removal of dirt, dust, impurities etc. always needs to be carried out, as without this, if paint is directly applied the application is irregular and only leads to reduced paint life. In certain regards Bosun Chair painting is slightly more expensive than other forms of paint application, as it is higher risk job due to the added height factor, but with the development of stronger suspension systems and ropes the cost has been brought down quite effectively. The working of the Bosun chair is such that when a paint job, or window cleaning which is another common application of the Bosun Chair specially when dealing with high rise buildings, is needed to be done a building that is high enough to eliminate safe use of other methods of painting, a rig is set up from the roof of the building.
The jig is through which all he ropes and suspension equipment will be set up and this is important as the suspension is what enables the painter to move down the building as well as for safety reasons because the safety harness also runs through the jig. One of the main disadvantages of Bosun Chair painting is that while it can be used for the painting and maintenance work of high rise buildings, the painter can only move in one direction, which is downwards, and cannot be used to pull the painter up in case the need arises. Also, the setup cannot be moves sideways and in case that needs to be done, the entire jig has to be set up again.
